ABOUT Basta

Since 2016, Basta has worked with thousands of first-generation college students of color to launch their careers and change the face of leadership in the workforce, resulting in the country’s best job placement outcomes. Through personalized AI-powered career planning, best-in-class coaching, and networking with top 100 employers, New York-based job seekers in Basta’s Fellowship program find great jobs at nearly twice the rate of their peers. Our Powered By Basta program is scaling this impact through game-changing analytics and online support that supercharges colleges’ career success programs so students nationwide can accelerate their professional journey.

SCOPE AND PROBLEM

American undergrads are facing a job market beset by systemic underemployment. The problem is especially severe for the nearly 5 million first-generation college students: only 44% of first-gen students of color land a job that requires their degree, and only 20% earn a living wage within a year of graduation.

These trailblazers have the smarts, skills, and experience to land a job that leverages their degree, pays well, and forges a path to a thriving career. Basta partners with colleges, nonprofits, and employers to build that bridge of opportunity.

OUR NEXT CHAPTER:

As we prepare to embark on our next phase of growth, positioned to exponentially increase the number of young professionals served through our direct services and career technology offerings, we are looking for dedicated leaders at the intersection of education, tech, business, and social impact to join our team.

ABOUT THE DATA AND ANALYTICS MANAGER

Reporting to the Director of Data Strategy, you will enable Basta’s growth as an increasingly data-driven organization. Your primary responsibility will be working closely with the Basta team to understand their most pressing questions and needs and the evolving ways they define and communicate impact. The team members you will interact with are, for the most part, non-technical, so to be successful in this role, effective translation between non-technical descriptions of a problem or question and a technical solution in the form of the analysis and visualization of data is required. Asking probing questions that take into consideration the business context that gets at the “why” behind the request and identifying themes across request types are important skills. Your key areas of responsibility will include:

Data Analysis: You will support team members in analyzing and interpreting data to improve data literacy, program quality, and better organizational decision-making. The candidate we are looking for has a demonstrated track record and expertise in:

  • Proficiency in data analysis tools such as Excel, SQL, and Google Sheets.
  • Familiarity with programming languages such as Python or R.
  • Knowledge of statistical methods and concepts, including regression analysis, hypothesis testing, and A/B testing.
  • Experience with statistical software such as SPSS or similar tools.
  • Basic understanding of machine learning algorithms and their applications.
  • Basic knowledge of using AI platforms, like ChatGPT, to expedite data analysis and tackle complex problems.

Data Visualization: You’ll create data visualizations, dashboards, and reports to bring the data to life to, for example, inform a narrative or assist Basta staff to fully appreciate a significant trend.

  • Ability to ask and answer questions that show impact vs. questions that only show outcomes
  • Ability to tell stories through complex data
  • Experience and proficiency in Tableau, Power BI, Matplotlib, Seaborn, Looker, Airtable Interfaces, or any other analogous software

Data Organization: You will be a pivotal source of information about the data needs of staff at all levels at Basta for the Director of Data Strategy which will inform what data collection and storage systems and processes are implemented.

  • Experience building and maintaining data systems, databases, and reporting.
  • Proficiency in data cleaning techniques, including ETL (Extract, Transform, Load).
  • Experience with relational databases such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, Sales Force, Oracle.

Facilitate Strategic Data Discussions: You will hold monthly meetings with leaders from different parts of the organization to foster discussions that promote curiosity and reveal important insights about the impact of our program and model. You will lead both formal sessions and informal talks to explore strategic questions and delve into specific outcomes we aim to measure, monitor, and understand better. This includes evaluating our program’s outcomes across offerings, subgroups, and cohorts both in the short term (this year) and in the long term (over time).

ABOUT OUR IDEAL CANDIDATE

You could be our Manager of Data and Analytics if:

  • You believe deeply in the inherent value and potential first-generation grads bring to the workplace and are excited to build an organization that supports them in achieving their career goals
  • You have 5+ years of professional experience in a fast-paced work environment
  • You have taken formal coursework or, ideally, have 3+ years of work experience using data analysis & visualization tools like PowerBI, Looker, Tableau, Airtable Interfaces, or any other analogous software.
  • Experience with R and/or Python is preferred but not required.
  • You pay attention to details but understand the big picture
  • You are curious and passionate about finding conclusions that move the needle in the data
  • You are a natural storyteller and excellent verbal and visual communicator
  • You have the ability to make complex topics simple to comprehend for the average person
  • Building systems and improving processes gives you energy
  • You possess excellent organizational skills and a keen attention to detail. This is balanced with flexibility, demonstrated resourcefulness, and an ability to multitask in setting priorities.
  • You work collaboratively and build effective relationships with internal staff and external partners to meet shared objectives.
  • You take initiative and are self-directed, but also know when to ask for help. You are willing to jump in wherever you are needed.
  • You’re comfortable working in a virtual environment using virtual communication/collaboration tools, including Google Docs, Zoom, and Slack
  • Lived experience of our fellows (Preferred)
