The Public Health Institute (PHI) is a large non-profit public health organization conducting a broad range of public health research, training, and technical assistance programs in California, throughout the nation, and around the world. PHI is seeking a full time Senior Communications Specialist (SCS) for the Public Health Law and Policy program (PHLP) for a new national policy and legal analysis network focusing on childhood obesity prevention. This position is located in Oakland, CA.

The SCS will focus on the strategic use of a wide variety of communications vehicles to build the networks impact and visibility, with a particular emphasis on website and new media strategies. Playing a key role within a dynamic and entrepreneurial public interest organization, this position provides an outstanding opportunity to apply strategic communications tactics to cutting-edge policy work on a critical public health issue.
A technology-savvy individual, the SCS will ensure that all communications efforts reach their intended audiences and promote overall program goals, and regularly audit communications systems, products, and capacity to plan and support future growth. Additionally, the SCS will oversee the consistency of the networks messages and branding. This position will be the primary liaison with the communications team at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF), the childhood obesity networks funder. Duties & Responsibilities
- Work with RWJF staff to develop and implement a communications plan and materials for PHLPs childhood obesity project
- Oversee the development and use of online collaboration tools to facilitate file-sharing, discussion, and decision-making among geographically dispersed work groups
- In conjunction with RWJF staff, establish and execute comprehensive campaigns and strategies to promote programs, products, and services to a variety of target audiences
- Manage a wide range of communications projects, ensuring that all team members involved understand project requirements, their role, budgets, and deadlines
- Working with RWJF staff, oversee the development of a fully interactive website that combines and expands upon content and functionality of several existing organizational websites, working closely with staff and vendors throughout the process
- Work closely with communications and program staff to plan and disseminate outreach and other materials, leveraging the use of traditional and digital media to reach target audiences efficiently
- Attend/participate in appropriate conferences, events, and networks as a representative of the network to establish visibility in communities relevant to the networks work
Qualifications
- A track record of creating traditional and new media strategies for nonprofit organizations during periods of growth
- A Bachelors degree in marketing, business, communication, or related field
- At least 5 years of nonprofit or corporate marketing/communications experience
- Strong organizational and project management skills
- Solid understanding of web development principles and technology, including HTML and content management systems
- Experience implementing new media strategies to increase online growth
- Familiarity with e-collaboration systems (e.g., wiki, SharePoint)
- Experience with instructional technology such as PowerPoint and webinar development and delivery
- Experience managing and supervising staff
- Ability to translate complex technical information into lay terms
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Strong team player (playing both leadership and execution roles) and demonstrated ability to negotiate and influence varying viewpoints between stakeholders
- Self-starter with ability to excel in a dynamic team environment

Salary is commensurate with experience.
