Do As I Say...

Ruby Sinreich (I adore you!) accused N-TEN of being un-web savvy the other day in her post about our new ED, Katrin Verclas. I think she's a little right and a little wrong. She's wrong in that we're not un-savvy, we're just a staff of 3, which makes it hard to prioritize a lot beyond the "what I need to get done to make it through the day."

She's right in that it just shouldn't matter. I've been running around the Bay Area opining to any friend who can still stand to listen to me about how the world has changed and we better wake up and smell the globalization, and to borrow from Thomas Friedman - flattening, before it's too late. (If you even pretend to ask me, I'll repeat this diatribe for you too!) But I haven't been heeding that advice here.

We're still very "web 1.0" over here. We've managed to take old processes and web-ify them, but we're still very much doing the same things. We need to be doing brand new things with all this great brand new technology. Helping people meet in any way we can - not just in person. We're certainly starting...but we have a long way to go.

Why? I keep saying "If I only had more staff!" Which is part truth, part cop out. We should just get over ourselves and make it happen. At the very least, we should heed another of Seth Godin's very excellent blog posts: What Do I Find? Small steps that every nonprofit can take, no matter how many staff they have (or don't).
