Start: 03/23/2010 - 11:00am

End: 03/23/2010 - 12:30pm

So you have a Drupal website -- but how to apply that beautiful design? Drupal's flexibility means you can give your site any look and feel you desire. Complex sites need intelligent theming solutions, and we'll discuss techniques that will allow your site to grow. This webinar will get you started creating your own custom theme -- we'll cover the Drupal template system and look at a few cool modules related to theming.

Takeaways:

How to leverage the Zen starter theme

How to plan and create a flexible custom theme

Advanced theming tips and tricks

This webinar is the third in our Online Storytelling Bootcamp. During
this webinar, we'll take everything you've learned and see what you've
come up with! We'll explore lessons and storytelling experiences as we
review 4-5 of our participants' stories. The group will provide
feedback and we'll look at ways to take your stories even further! This
session will also culminate in an Affinity Group at the 2010 NTC, where
participants will present their stories to a larger audience.

After this webinar, you'll know how to:

Recognize the elements of a good online story

Use feedback to further craft and polish your story

Take the next steps by determining the best use for your story within your organization

stint in humanitarian aid analysis, and a couple years overseas working
for a women's micro-finance program in Cambodia and Kenya. Shifting to
a focus in international development related work in 2005, Michaela

Good Maintenance: Upgrading your Drupal Site

Start: 03/30/2010 - 11:00am

Timezone: US/Pacific

Good Maintenance: Upgrading your Drupal Site
Upgrading Drupal is essential to maintaining a healthy, smoothly running website. With the release of Drupal 7 right around the corner, a lot of Drupal 5 sites are at risk of no longer being able to have security patches from Drupal. This webinar will cover all the steps you need to take when upgrading a Drupal site for either minor or major releases. We'll discuss the steps for upgrading from Drupal 5 to 6 as an example. In addition, we'll talk about how to know when you need an update, and tests you can run once the upgrade is complete.

Takeaways:

Why upgrade?

Steps to take to upgrade your Drupal site

How to test your upgraded site

1. How to write complete website design RFP

Presented by: Sean Speer and Scott Williams, Community IT Innovators

Sean Speer engages clients to develop innovative and effective solutions to their Information Technology (IT) challenges. He has worked for a number of technology companies over the years in a variety of sectors and organizations ranging from an advanced computer graphics firm to the independent farming community of Central California. Prior to working with CITI Sean could be found hiking to Everest Base camp or living in a yurt in Mongolia as a Peace Corps Volunteer, where he taught English and worked with a 17th Century Tibetan Buddhist monastery. Sean studied Computer Science, Microbiology, and English Literature and holds a B.S. degree in Literature from San Francisco State University. Sean is an avid reader and bicyclist (not at the same time), a yogi, and eclectic music collector.

Scott Williams helps organizations plan and execute strategic use of technology to make their internal processes more efficient and organic, and their external communications more effective. Scott came to Community IT Innovators in April 2006 after 12 years working in the nonprofit sector.ﾠ He worked for nine years with the Institute for Policy Studies and nearly four years with the Farm Animal Reform Movement. He has experience in fundraising, event management, activist education, national grassroots campaigns, organizational management, and, always, technology.ﾠ Scott has served on the boards of the Vegetarian Society of DC, and the Vegetarian Union of North America. While at the Institute for Policy Studies, he edited the book Light Among Shadows: A Celebration of Orlando Letelier, Ronni Karpen Moffitt, and Heroes of the Human Rights Movement. While working on his Executive Certificate in Nonprofit Management at Georgetown University, Scott caught the strategic planning bug, and he is particularly energized when engaged in strategic discussions with clients. His other interests include his daughter Grace (born September 3, 2005), soccer, music, vegan cooking (and eating), and reading long books, some of them in Spanish.

10NTC Live: Unleashing Technology to Advance Social & Economic Development

Start: 04/09/2010 - 1:30pm

End: 04/09/2010 - 3:00pm

Timezone: US/Eastern

Technology can be an amazing tool for social and economic development. It can help people get a better education, learn new skills to earn a living wage, or start a business. It also can enable organizations to meet community needs by broadening access to healthcare, education, micro-banking and other essential services.

One of the most significant advances in information technology (IT) today is the growing connectivity among devices— computers, mobile phones and even televisions. With the widespread penetration of mobile phones and other handheld devices that connect to the Web, nearly 4 billion people worldwide now have some level of access to computing. Increasingly powerful and feature-rich software applications are emerging to run these intelligent and interconnected mobile computing devices. At the same time, the Internet continues to mature as a gateway for “cloud computing,” in which remote datacenters host data and serve applications over the Web for use across a broad spectrum of devices and IT systems.

The convergence of device connectivity, software innovation and cloud-based services offers great potential to improve how we all work, but even more significant promise for NGOs to manage their operations more effectively, deliver a broader array of services and achieve a greater impact in the communities they serve.

This Leadership session will bring together a panel of top NGO IT experts and CIOs for an interactive and forward thinking discussion of technology’s potential as a disruptive force o better achieve their missions and accelerate social and economic development.

Takeaways:

1. Overview of IT trends, relevancy and opportunity for NGOs and social change mission organizations
2. Learn about and share innovative examples of IT advancing social change and the challenges of pursuing IT in the developing world. Bring your ideas!
3. Discuss with leading NGO IT experts and CIOs about how NGO leaders and IT staff/experts can partner together to achieve a common IT vision.

This session will be presented live from the 2010 Nonprofit Technology Conference.
Register to view the live presentation -- the slides and audio -- just
like any other webinar, from the comfort of your office or home. You'll
also be able to participate and ask your questions of the presenters in
Atlanta through the chat feature.
