Meet the Author: Media Rules!: Mastering Today's Technology to Connect with and Keep Your Audience
Event Details
The NTEN Meet the Author is another way we hope to give the the knowledge you need to excel in your work environment. We're giving you a good reason to get away from your computer screen and put some real paper in your hands. The summer reading will begin with the new book, Media Rules!: Mastering Today's Technology to Connect with and Keep Your Audience by Brian Reich and Dan Solomon.
Media Rules! discusses what it takes for today's organizational leader to survive and thrive in the new communications universe. Media Rules! offers a rare look at how you can effectively develop successful media-centric strategies and reveals real ways to implement them in your everyday business endeavors. With this book as your guide, you'll quickly learn how to view everything you do as an organization through three broad lenses: everything is fragmented and blurred, small things can gain great attention, and we are all connected. Along the way, you'll also discover how to distinguish yourself from the competition by finding new ways to operate, creating new models to better serve your audience, and harnessing the full potential that technology provides.
You may buy the book through us (we offer the book for a 20% discount off the cover price; that works out cheaper than Amazon when you factor in shipping) with access to a 'Meet the Author' online chat and phone call with Brian Reich. If you already have the book, you may join us for this unique 'Meet the Author' session without purchasing the book. Even if you don't want to read the book, you can still join us -- but we're not sure that would make a lot of sense.
The recording of this session is not available. We apologize for the inconvenience. Please see the Event Materials for the Chat Transcript.

Anna_NTEN: Hello to today's Meet the Author session!
Brian Reich: Hello, all...
ntenhross: what are you guys doing with social media in your orgs?
Liz Anderson Simmons: Re: getting to know your audience - for an organization that is already online (in a web 1.0, information-based setting), how would you recommend that you get to know your audience beyond web statistics and surveys?
ntenhross: Great question Liz
Scarlett from IAA: we're pretty much going from no social media to some, so we're trying to take baby steps: user ratings and commentary on our Web site, starting a blog, creating RSS feeds, letting our members share resources (like PPTs) with each other through the site.
Ruby: We are currently redeveloping our website and identifying audiences. But we have constituents/members/supporters from 18 to 80.
Brian Reich: @Scarlett - sounds like you are doing some interesting things. How's it going so far?
Brian Reich: @Ruby - do you know your audience is using your website, or are there other places that you know they are hanging out (and might be worth focusing on as well)?
Scarlett from IAA: well, we haven't implemented yet: waiting for the launch of our new brand in January 2009. we've done a lot of research, though, using research on our demographics and what our constituents want to select tools and develop frames for why we're using them.
Ruby: Good Q, Brian. Not many are using our web site now b/c it sucks. I think that older members are less intersted in reading out blog (for example) but now we deliver it by e-mail, which I think they will dig.
AC: We're using Facebook and LinkedIn. Our own sites don't currently let our members interact much.
Ruby: OK, we all consume lots of media. Which media moves us to take action? Where are we when we get that message?
ntenhross: @Ruby - is this getting at your question?
Ruby: Somewhat.
Marylee: So listening and "naming" the response is key to adapting the message?
Ruby: I agree with what Brian's saying, I just don't have the capacity to be that sophisticated in our communications. :-(
AC: it requires a lot of work to build relationships online.
AC: People who don't work in online marketing/ outreach tend to think it is instantaneous
Brian Reich: @Ruby - not trying to suggest that it is sophisticated. Quite the opposite actually.
Brian Reich: I want to suggest that this stuff should be more basic, more straightforward - and not letting the technology over-complicate the core interactions with your audience
AC: talk with your audience not at them?
Ruby: But you are suggesting that I segment my messaging to people based on when and how they joined the list (for example)
Brian Reich: @Ruby - yes. I'll explain on the call and type her more later if needed.
Ruby: Expensive in terms of TIME.
AC: Have to run to a meeting. Thanks Brian!
Brian Reich: thank you!
Ruby: Who has $100k? That is not in my universe.
Ruby As usual. :-)
Brian Reich: Not in anyone's universe - but that is what a lot of groups end up spending on technology and staff when you get into the internet space
Ruby :-)
Scarlett from IAA: it's ok, ruby, you're not alone :)
Siobhan: @Brian, can you talk more about this - but specifically around conquering fear of letting go "control" over messaging - via blogs, social media etc
Brenda@jcsana: Thanks, so much Brian and NTEN...have to go now....
Siobhan: This is great. Another question - if you've got time - we've got a big piece of our membership that is a bit older - not connected to social media much - how do you suggest are good practices for introducing it and connecting folks
Siobhan: Brian and nten, this was great. Thanks.
Marylee: could you expand on the new unique opportunities that technology creates that provide better relationship building experiences?
Brian Reich: you can email me and I'll continue this.
Brian Reich: but let me try and answer a few questions before we goBrian Reich: as well...
Kate Skegg: will there be an ongoing conversation on http://www.themediarules.com following the last chapter (17) in the future?
Brian Reich: thank you, Marylee - hope I hit your answer
Brian Reich: @Kate - you nailed me, I haven't finished it.
Kate Skegg: it is unfinished :(
Marylee: Absolutely!
Kate Skegg: ok - thanks - we'll be following the progress
Brian Reich: thinkingaboutmedia.com
Kate Skegg: I see sales on Amazon going up so there is some more buzz this week
Ruby: Thanks, Brian!
Liz Anderson Simmons: Thanks, Brian and NTEN crew!
Brian Reich: woo hoo! I have a strict no sharing policy (you must buy books for your friends - grin), so that might help as well
Brian Reich: Be honest, if I sucked you have to tell them (not necessarily me)
Brian Reich: and please, if you have questions or anything (including criticism, or spelling errors or whatever), email me - brian@themediarules.com
Kate Skegg: ok brian - I will be emailing :)
