Ken Jordan and Mark Surman have published a new report for the Social Science Research Council, Civil Technologies: The Values of Nonprofit ICT Use.
The report, funded by the Ford Foundation, looks at eleven exemplary
ICT projects undertaken by civil society organizations around the
world. Those interviewed include Allen Gunn (then of the Ruckus
Society), Ruby Sinreich (then of Planned Parenthood), and
representatives from other projects around the world.
They identify the challenges as:
- Planning Capacity
- Resources
- Research and Evaluation
They identify five common approaches that lead to successful ICT projects:
- Integrate online with offline
- Design for engagement, not just information sharing
- Incorporate user feedback
- Link the local to the global (and vice versa)
- Expect challenges to organizational structures
